Q:  What is Music Therapy?

A:  Music Therapy is an alternative method that addresses the cognitive, emotional, physical, and social needs of children and adults with disabilities and/or special needs.  Using a vehicle such as music, our Specialists are able to assist in improving the quality of life of children with special needs by helping to rebuild the connections that may have been missing due to disability or illness.

Q:  My child loves the water, but is not a strong swimmer.  Is it still safe for my child to learn to surf?

A:  We have life vests that we can provide for your child.  Our Surf Instructors have extensive experience in water safety and assessing ocean conditions.  Most of our Instructors were former lifeguards, and they are all CPR/First-Aid Certified.  We are camped near beach lifeguard stations/towers, and we usually surf fairly close to shore in waist-high to chest-high waters.  We also offer tandem surfing, so that the child/adolescent is actually surfing on the board with an instructor.

Q:  Do I need to purchase any equipment for the surf lessons?

A:  We provide the wet suits and surf boards (with the exception of "special sizes").  Water socks are recommended; we may not have all sizes available.  You can provide your own equipment if you prefer, but we will not turn anyone away due to lack of proper equipment.

Q:  How is surfing therapeutic?

A:  Surfing provides sensory stimulation.  We work on Gross Motor Skills, and Motor Planning (concentrating on both upper and lower extremities), including balance.  Surfing also provides cardiovascular conditioning, and the opportunity to increase muscle tone.  We also work on cognitive stimulation such as focusing and task completion.  Surfing also provides opportunities for social interaction; therefore, promoting speech and language development.  It is also a wonderful way to increase self-esteem, self-efficacy, and to boost confidence levels.

Q:  Are you a Regional Center Vendor?

A:  Currently, we are a private pay company and are not vendored through the Regional Center.

Q:  What locations do you serve?

A:  We currently offer private in-home or at-school services throughout the San Fernando Valley and greater Los Angeles area.  Our surf program is based in the Malibu and Venice Beach area.
